Ceboruco – Main Launch
Airtime has done mountain training tours at many sites over the years. Tours to Mexico are tops in our books for the full range of great thermal flying, unbelievably good food, amazing towns and adventures. Jeff Greenbaum has been doing tour and flown about 8 or 10 sites in this region and can share this incredible region with pilots from P2 or above.
The 2025 Mexico tour is a flex tour, using the sites in Tapalpa, Colima, both in Jalisco and possibly Volcano, Ceboruco in Nayarit. The first night is planned for a central hotel and thereafter, since the wind has a mind of its own, we move to the site that will have the best conditions, and move when it will benefit the flying and fun.
Multi Site Tour
Weather will determine which ones we make, but options are good to have, Yes.
Ceboruco
Nayarit has an extensive plateau with beautiful volcanoes, including the main flying location for this tour, El Volcan Ceboruco. There is an easy road to this newly opened launch (July 2022) above the beautiful town of Jala where we will be staying. This is a small mountain town where you rarely encounter tourists from anywhere but Mexico. There is great XC potential and a friendly LZ on the edge of town for local thermal flying. The main, late morning launch, is near the top of the 7,000 ft mountain, and the other is a lower launch, used later in the day for afternoon flights when the westerlies kick in. After using the main lauch last year, the window of time for success is short, if we do go here, we will likely hike up to the west launch.
Tapalpa and Colima
Tapalpa is one of the best sites in the world for newer P2 pilots, up to XC hungry P4 pilots. The site faces east and is a ridge that is also a mesa. The ridge goes 20 miles to the North and also over 10 miles to the South with many great landing areas below and also downwind on the mesa. The launch is wide and was used for international competitions a couple times. The thermals can take pilots on good days to as high as 13000 ft, with great XC potential. Newer thermal pilot can do their first XC flights here, to landing areas on the mesa or even to the town of Tapalpa about 7 miles downwind of launch (see video on left, from a previous tour, it includes both Tapalpa and Colima flying)
